If you are a go-getter, meditation is the last thing you have in mind.

It seems like doing nothing.

When you really want to act to improve your life.

It’s a paradox.

Sometimes you need to stand still to move forward.

The Here and Now Habit Book Cover

1.- The Here and Now Habit by Hugh G. Byrne, PhD

I almost passed over this book. I’m not interested in Buddhism. I’m grateful I didn’t. The Here and Now Habit answered an inquired I have had for years.

The Here and Now Habit opened my eyes about how meditation affects the brain among other things.

After reading this book, I realized meditation had plenty to do with my life changes and began to meditate every day.

What I loved about this book is its scientific approach to mindfulness. I learned about neuroscience, how meditation changes the brain. I realized it influenced my actions in the past for the better.

Even though my pragmatic side is pretty happy, Dr. Joe Dispenza warns “we should never wait for science to give us permission to do the uncommon; if we do, then we are turning science into another religion.”

2.- Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Dr. Joe Dispenza

Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself Book Cover

Breaking the habit of being yourself is a mix of emerging scientific concepts and age-old wisdom. A guide for you to realize “you are a multidimensional being who creates your reality.”

Part I and II explore the mind, body, and environment so you have the knowledge to “have more power and intention behind the practical experience of truly changing your mind.” Part III is about meditation practice with Dr. Joe Dispenza method.

Doing the work: Dr. Joe Dispenza emphasizes meditating every day, even if you don’t feel like it. It’s vital to break a habit and create a different reality in your life.

I wondered if it was a waste of time to practice meditation or yoga when I couldn’t focus at all. However, showing up and doing the work even if I don’t feel like it proved it’s key, and Dr. Joe Dispenza confirms it.

Meditating with Dr. Joe Dispenza method is on my to-do list. I use guided meditations by a different author or nothing at all.

His workshop attendants’ testimonials are amazing. You can find then on Dr. Joe Dispenza youtube channel.

You are the Placebo Book Cover

3.- You Are the Placebo by Dr. Joe Dispenza

Dr. Joe Dispenza focuses on how the placebo effect affects the brain and the body. Moreover, how to change the body by thought alone, because intention paired with an elevated emotion change our biology.

The placebo is usually a pill, in this book, meditation substitutes the placebo pill “So think of your meditation practice as a way for you to take the placebo every day. But instead of taking a pill, you’ll be going inward.”

Dr. Dispenza relies on different research studies over the years to back up his ideas, but he also presents before and after meditation brain scans of his workshop attendants. For example, the brain scan of people with Parkinson’s disease or traumatic brain injury showing the changes meditation produces in these individuals.

Into the Magic Shop Book Cover

4 .- Into the Magic Shop by James R. Doty, MD

“What you think you want isn’t always what is best for you.”

Dr. James Doty, a Neurosurgeon, tells his story and how because of his poor and dysfunctional upbringing, he wished wealth and power. Even though he got everything he wanted, he wasn’t happy.

Into the Magic Shop is “Part memoir, part science, part inspiration, and part practical instruction, Into the Magic Shop, shows us how we can fundamentally change our lives by first changing our brains and our hearts.”

Great to read about meditation from a neurosurgeon point of view, and how he rebuilt his life after understanding what opening the heart meant.

The key point is consistency. Pair intention with an elevated emotion and you are good to change your life for the better.
